In mmogames social system are most important. Promoting clans and player cooperation should be part of a design.
Promoting clans: make special controls to set up allies or factions. Promoting cooperation: add tools such as ability to draw on the map ... draw lines and put markers for other players to see...

Planetside uses what are called 'Battleplans' very effectively, where you can draw on the map and indicate waypoints and objectives for your squad. Ballerium allows players to send markers to eachother, too, but I'd certainly like to see this developed further. Currently, minimaps are not the strongpoint of the MMORTS games out there, unfortunately.

The drawing and marking done on the map directly I think is more of what I was thinking of.
Here time of defiance has a good system - a full scrreen bump map for planning with markers and notes etc. All sendable to allies. We wanted shared maps for allies etc and these weretn forthcoming. I find it a shame that more mundane additions like maps and hotkeys are always neglected by devs but form the core demands by most veterans. Newbs always want another unit...
