I recently read Developing Online Games - An Insider's Guide by Jessica Mulligan and Bridgette Patrovsky. This book is a rare glimpse of what is required to actually build and launch a MMO title from the management and design perspective. The book goes into details on designing games to both gain and retain players and has some interesting sections on the psychology of gameplay. No mere theoretical exercise, the book is bulging with industry experts sharing their experiences and recommendations, these are the people who launched nearly every major MMO up until about 2002 when the book was written.

The book features not just success stories, but outlines many of the major missteps and out and out failures that online games continue to repeat. Key is that they also tell you how you can avoid them.

The final section of the book features a number of post-mortems and articles collected from the major MMO developers.

If you are seriously considering launching a MMO and are ready to lay out the 15 million or so cost of entry, you owe it to yourself to sit down with this book. It will pay for itself tens of thousands times over come launch day!
